1. Leader: 40-60 lb fluorocarbon or a 7-strand wire at least 25 cm long. Pike teeth cut mono instantly.
2. Knot: a loop knot (non-slip mono loop) lets the body swim freely instead of pivoting on a rigid eye.
3. Rod and reel: 7-8 ft medium-heavy casting rod, 30-50 lb braid. You need backbone to drive a single hook home through a dense body.
4. Optional: a screw-in belly weight or a 3-7 g stick-on weight if you need to reach deeper water or fish faster in wind.

The retrieve that gets bit

Cast, let it sink on a slack line and count. The count is the whole game - start at 5 seconds, and if nothing happens go to 8, then 12. Once it reaches the zone:

• Lift and fall: raise the rod tip 40-60 cm, then drop the tip and reel the slack. Most hits come as the bait falls. If your line suddenly stops falling, strike.
• Straight slow roll: steady, just fast enough to feel the tail. Use this for covering water and locating fish.
• Double twitch: two short rod snaps with a two-second pause. This is the follower trigger - work it hard in the last 3 m before the net.
